De Waterpieper is een broevogel van Alpiene gebieden zoals de Pyreneen, Alpen en de Balkan. De soort tekt in de winter naar het Middellandse Zeegebied en doet hierbij in kleine aantallen Nederland aan, vooral de IJsselmeergebieden. Vaak indidividueel te zien of in combinatie met ander Piepers.

Broedt boven boomgrens in alpiene weiden. Zakt in winter af tot op zeeniveau en verblijft dan op oevers, in vochtige weilanden en op ondergelopen akkers. Mijdt zoute milieus.

Gedurende de herfst trekt de Waterpieper vanuit de hoog gelegen broedgebieden naar lagere gebieden. De Noord en Centraal Europese popluatie trekt met name langs de kuststreken richting vooral Iberie. Is bijvoorbeeld in Portugal veel voorkomend tijdens de wintermaanden. Ook de trek terug naar de broedgebieden verloopt via de kuststreek waar vooral natte vegetatie wordt bezocht. Is in Nederland doortrekker en wintergast, wordt vooral gedurende de wintermaanden waargenomen (oktober-maart).
