De groenling is oorspronkelijk een bewoner van bosranden en halfopen zoomvegetatie. Dat natuurlijke habitat is zeldzaam geworden en tegenwoordig bewoont de groenling vooral cultuurlandschappen: als er maar genoeg dichte struiken zijn. Groenlingen zijn niet erg territoriaal en broeden soms in een los kolonieverband. De meeste vogeltellers tellen niet in bebouwde gebieden, maar voornamelijk in natuurgebieden. Daardoor is de populatie groenlingen in Nederland waarschijnlijk iets te laag ingeschat en lijkt een aantal van 50.000 tot 100.000 paren aannemelijk.

Groenlingen kunnen worden gevonden waar dicht struikgewas voorkomt. En dat zijn dus vaak tuinen, parken en bosranden, in de duinen, kleinschalig cultuurlandschap en allerhande andere struikrijke plaatsen.

De in ons land algemeen voorkomende groenlingen zijn standvogels. Na het broedseizoen zwerven Groenlingen rond, vaak in kleine groepjes. Behalve in Noord Scandinavie, omvat hun leefgebied geheel Europa. Een gedeelte van de Europese groenlingen (Noordelijke populaties) is trekvogel, en trekken naar Frankrijk en het Iberisch Schiereiland. Een enkele groenling waagt de oversteek naar Groot-Brittannië. Ook Noord-Afrika behoort tot hun leefgebied.
